I don't think C is grammatically incorrect, its just unnecessarily wordy. A is concise.

C is not grammatically wrong but simply changes the meaning of the sentence. "The very life" puts an emphasis on the life aspect of the community whereas "very threatening" puts an emphasis on the urgency of the scarcity of salt. As a matter of fact, "threatening", in and of itself already conveys a sense of urgency and there is no real need to put "very" in front of "threatening".

I second Paul in the thought that choice C changes the meaning with the repositioning of the word 'very'.

My choice is A.
