Two things to keep in mind:
1. Visa- which company will sponsor your visa post MBA.
2. Salary - most applicants take loans for an MBA education. If you have to take one, you would want to ensure that your post MBA job pays enough so that you are able to start paying back the loan. If you get a full ride or a substantial scholarship by bschools, then this will somewhat get taken care of and the financial burden can become lesser
Factor these points in when you are framing your goals for the b-school applications.

I am assuming that INSEAD is an exception to your North American ambition. Re wanting to work in / with the government, a direct entry for an international will naturally depend on your research - do NA government bodies hire international MBAs? Equally important will be your self-reflection on whether your experiences and skills are portable from India to USA, Canada, Mexico? Lastly (for now), how will MBA education prepare you for such possibilities?
There isn't much information on you available here, except your GPA, which is okay, though marginally lower than the average for some schools you have listed. You will also need to undertake deep dive into understanding what do each schools look for, which of these are Indian-friendly, liberal on scholarships (given your non-profit background, am guessing that a scholarship for you may be a must), etc. etc. - Dee (MBA admissions consultant)

Hi Dee, UNICEF has offered me a position, and some specializations will help me with the job. I took a practice test and scored 700
User avatar
14 May 2024, 03:51
This is great. Well done. You shouldn't even think about or need an MBA then, especially since UNICEF has offered you a position without you having an MBA.

Hi IVV, it appears that you are in a position that allows you to create significant impact. This will give you a leg up when you apply to business schools. Al of these schools may be possible - the GMAT is a missing piece as of now. You will need to work on your goals as well. How do you explain a pivot from non profit? And to what? And how does the MBA fit in the middle? Anyhow, this is all research you have time for. GMAT needs to happen first. Reach out if you want to chat: https://bit.ly/GM_AugAcd_Profile_Evaluation

Hi. If you are looking at Government work, Kennedy School of Public Policy is a great option. It is a lot easier to get into. I would figure out which government you want to work at however, as it gets tricky for internationals to work in most gov positions in the US unless you are a contractor.
User avatar
15 May 2024, 16:08
Hi i_V_V, Are you working directly with the GOI or with a non profit that works with GOI (I have worked with an applicant coming from the latter profile and also working on NEP, therefore curious).
I am going to agree with the others on the challenge of finding a job with the US government if your are an international student (I will mention about the same applicant once again - as we did research on his career goals at that time). Spend some time talking to students with similar background as yours and try to figure out what post MBA career paths can work for you. feel free to reach out for a deeper conversation on this.

Hello Namita, I am directly involved with the government, also when I say government and non-profit I mean the UN and related agencies. I am exploring what else I can do with an MBA degree. I am interested in HR roles that pivot around human capital.

Hello, I have been working in tech as a full-stack developer for the last 4+ years with a 2.5-year gap(preparing for UPSC). I am planning to take GMAT and target ISB for the next cohort. I am currently also researching LBS and LSE and I want to know if this is the right time to put my bets outside India. I plan to switch to Consulting / Finance / Product Management roles.

Hi Nidhi,
well, post MBA recruitments have suffered everywhere, including in UK and therefore at LBS. We can hope that they will pick up by the time you are ready for recruitment two years later. ISB can be a safer bet and will help you to switch to any of the industries you have mentioned (depends on what roles you are targeting). That said, you will have to pinpoint one particular industry that you wish to work in post MBA and also show some transferable skills for that industry/role. Mentioning all 3 in your applications will make you come across as confused and unaware of your career aspirations, which will harm your candidature.
The 2.5 year gap should be explainable through an optional essay (many Indian MBA applicants try for UPSC, so it will not be unheard of by UK b-schools). The adcoms will want to see some personal/professional development during that time period.

710 is quite respectable but it’s just fine to wait till Round two.

The top three are unpredictable. The top 10 are unpredictable as well😂 but it seems you would be a high benefit and low risk and the great alum for the business schools. You can try to retake the GMAT score but frankly, I think it’s just fine. You can also try to take the GRE in case you want to put your concerns to rest and apply with both. If you have nothing else to do 😂

I would suggest against an MBA and debt that comes with it.... I would keep working in consulting and start your business on a side. You would have something to fall back on if it does not work out and if it takes off, you can quit. This would also strengthen your MBA profile, no matter the outcome, so i would suggest that starting your own venture is better NOW and not after studying for the GMAT, 2 years of classes, and a ton of debt. Of course your situation may be different but with 1 line - this is my recommendation.

I would take this scholarship. With your experience level, you will be recruiting outside of the very traditional mba pathways. Those pathways are also taking a huge ding right now so I would recommend taking the money. Minimizes the downside and makes the hourly better in almost any outcome.

PS. HR is taking a pause as well as many firms pausing hiring.

Hello,
With over 5 years of experience in fintech, I've excelled as a Sales Manager, leading teams of 30+ people and also managing teams across two cities. Transitioning into Product Management as an Associate Product Manager for a year, I honed my strategic skills. Despite my MBA from a tier-3 college, I'm now poised for a single-year MBA from a reputable institution, focusing on product/project management roles. My academic achievements include 85% in 10th, 82% in 12th, a B.Tech(Mech)with an 8.02 CGPA, and an MBA with a 7.23 CGPA.
My target schools are ISB and IIMs. I seek your feedback and suggestions for my application.

Hi Ranu, hope you are doing great. You seemingly have a strong profile. Work hard on the GMAT and attain your target score.
You might be new to the admissions process, so I would like to give you my most valued advice. Be unapologetically authentic in your essays and show who you truly are. Business schools love originality in thought and voice. Recently I have been noticing a lot of applicants relying on AI tools to phrase their essays and getting rejected. Its best to learn early on that the common chat gpt kind of tools wash out the originality in your voice/ thoughts and make you look like any other candidate (which is not the goal in the applications).

Overall you are at a sweet spot in terms of work experience and you have a solid growth trajectory with the proof of your switch from sales to product. You need to be strategic about finding the hooks in your experience. ISB and IIM A see a lot of pre-MBA techies applying to the program. You will have to execute your application and interviews well to stand out. You need to unpack your experiences and reconstruct your stories in a way that shows that working on high-impact projects has given you a much more hands-on experience and opportunity to engage with leaders from the industry, more experiential maturity, and more capability to contextualize business problems than most who apply. Always remember that schools are spoilt for choice and they won't blink an eye before rejecting a very young applicant who has an improvement area.

I am guessing your post MBA goals are in product management because of your recent transition. Product is a broad domain and the typical error candidates make is not delving further into their area of interest and desire to learn about a problem they have witnessed through their experience or to capitalize on an opportunity. The same remains true of Strategy Consulting goals.
Your application should be crafted so that each component contributes to justifying your goals and your choice of school.

Feel free to speak should you want guidance in cracking the admits.

Best wishes
Aanchal Sahni (INSEAD MBA alum, former INSEAD MBA admissions interviewer)

Best wishes

Hi - will need to look at your resume to see what kind of impact you've created at work so far. I'm hoping it is good. Your work experience is on the higher side for a regular MBA - though you may still be a viable candidate if you apply this year for the 2025 intake. For most of the schools you have in mind, you will need a higher GMAT. Feel free to reach out at https://bit.ly/GM_AugAcd_Profile_Evaluation to chat more.

Not sure if GMAT can be pushed higher but for a few of these such as Judge and INSEAD and HEC, 640 will be a tough proposition.

Otherwise, global programs love to have people with more experience and ideally with good brands on the resume. That will help significantly with employment as well!
