Congrats to all the admits! Don't give up if you were waitlisted w/o interview--that was me last year and everything worked out nicely.

Well, it looks like the infamous Haas W/L is alive and well. That just means at least 50% of you will get off the W/L and join us this fall! :)

R1 = 18 FT, 8 Interviews, 3 Admits, 6 W/L, 4 Dings

5 unknowns...

Good info on Haas' FT rankings on BW:

original question
In FT rankings, Haas has steadily fallen from 13, 16, 25 to 32 in 2008.

What has been the reason for this. Is the school planning to do something about it?

answer
Thanks for your thoughtful post, I'll do my best to address your concern.

The first thing to call out is that the Financial Times is just one ranking, among many, and their standards for measuring schools differ from others (such as US News, WSJ etc). Most critically, the Financial Times rankings places a lot of weight on post-graduate salaries. In fact, 40% of their rankings are driven by salary figures. As a result, you'll see a lot of finance/consulting heavy schools ranked high up because obviously those jobs will command high salaries. Another angle, for example, would be the WSJ rankings which are driven by recruiters assessment of schools. Here, Haas has consistently risen in the rankings and recently placed #2 overall.

Although Haas sends many people into these professions, we also pride ourselves on a curriculum that emphasizes non-traditional career paths - such as non profit, corporate social responsibility or entrepreneurship. If you take a closer look at the Financial Times rankings and dig into their category rankings, you will see that Haas scores incredibly well in these areas...areas that may not equate to a high salary immediately after graduation.

In fact, Haas ranks in the Top 10 for several category specific rankings:

#1 - Corporate Social Responsibility

#1 - e-business

#4 - Entrepreneurship

#5 - IT

#6 - Economics

#9 - Consulting Salaries

Haas strives to be considered among the best business schools in the world, but we also want to offer a dynamic curriculum that affords our students both traditional and non-traditional career paths.

I hope this answers your question, thanks for your post.

Does anyone know when the R2 Super Saturday will be? I think the speculation has been 3/8, any confirmation? I know its a bit presumptuous, but in the event I get an invite, I'd like not to have scheduled something else for the same days.

Evl, I'm guessing two weekends before the deadline date. so March 8th? I'm putting my bets on that date.

We still don't have any R3 applicants eh? Strange.

So far they haven't posted the transcript yet, but you can check here.

I was only able to catch some of the chat, thus my request for the full transcript, but Pete did say that in past years, between 25-50% of the waitlisted applicants were admitted. He did qualify that statement that he expects it to be closer to 25 than 50 this year. Also, I think he also said that the quality of applicants is almost the same as last years.

After 2 dings in RD1, I'm trying to do what's in my power to get admitted. I have an interview this Thursday on-campus. For those who have already interviewed, does anyone have any advice (e.g. questions asked)? Need some help....

On the chat, they said that historically they admit about 25-50% off their waitlist. Considering the increase in applications, they expect it will be towards the lower number this year, but they did say that was mere speculation. Now I don't know what is typical for waitlist numbers, but they said in R1, they admitted about 150 people and have 110 confirmed on their waitlist. I was pretty surprised it was that high from just one round (that's almost 1/2 of their expected class), but they review the waitlist after each round and either keep on the waitlist, admit or ding so I guess it will move around some after each round.

thanks trojan and red_s4.

150 in R1 sounds about right, assuming 50% yield like past years. If they do 150 per round, they get 75 matriculating, with R4 being very limited in admissions, that's about right. R1 + R2 will give 150 students, R3 probably gives 50-75 students, while R4 rounds out the rest.

With 110 on the waitlist, assuming 30% comes off this year, that's roughly 40 students for R1. I'm suspecting that R3 and R4 numbers will be very low, to allow some R1 and R2 W/L to get in.

As for the interview, just relax. The questions are pretty much, "Why MBA, Why Berkeley, Why Now", and things like "Why did you choose to do this job?" "Why did you transition to that job?" "What is your leadership style?" "How did you deal with a difficult situation?" "What are times you failed, what did you learn from it?" "What will you do to contribute to Haas?" "What are some ideas for your short and long term goals?"

Just know your story well and you should do fine. Relax, smile, be friendly, don't fidget.

Good luck trojan!

With 110 on the waitlist...

Yeah I agree 150 is what I expected to be admitted during R1. I was just surprised that 110 were placed on the waitlist from just one round, but maybe R1 always has a high number of people placed on the waitlist versus the other rounds.

makes sense, since after R1, everyone else can be compared to the R1 admits and W/L, so they can make a better determination on who is qualified to make it or not.
