I'm sitting here procrastinating like crazy with my essays. How do you all approach the writing process? For me, I usually sit in front of the computer after work or on the weekends and stare at the screen for a few hours. Then all of a sudden I get a burst of inspiration and write non-stop for 2 hours. The next day then consists of staring at what I wrote for a couple hours and rearranging sentences or swapping words. I had no idea it would be this slow.

First of all,
Welcome back baer. I have a problem with inspiration myself. I am no born writer (most people in the forum aren't). I find brainstorming they key. Basically coming up with points / ideas that can be expanded later.
But when it comes to actual writing it is pretty similar to what you said. Sporadic bursts of inspiration coupled with long periods of frustrating inactivity.
ps. How far are you with your NYU essay ?

I think the most productive writing time for me so far was a 30-minute train ride from work to home today... It's amazing how "it" just hits you randomly.
I'm pretty sure that I will have NOTHING creative in my mind when I finally sit down in front of my computer at home this weekend.

(I'm actually kinda serious)... wouldn't it be funny if we had a thread where people post their first drafts of their essays, just for everyone to see how bad it is? Maybe that'll help the anxiety and stress of current applicants so they know that even those who get into H/S/W start off very humbly 
)
