Now that I have a few admits, I know that I get to send ding letters to a couple places. When do you guys do it?

Without getting into a discussion of which school I DON'T want, how long do you lead them on? I am just afraid of closing any doors at this point.

As long as you like. Schools lead you on for months and they definetly dont tell you their decision as soon as they know, so I see no reason to treat them differently - unless you have made your decision - in which case you might as well tell them so someone on the waitlist has a chance.

Well you need to let them down gently. Say something like, "Look, it's not you, really. It's just.......I found another school. Don't get angry, you knew I was looking at other schools, we were never exclusive, even though I may have said you were my one and only in that interview, I actually meant it at the time...I know you'll be fine, there are plenty of other students out there, I know you'll find someone else....We can still be friends right?"

I prefer the "chicken way out". i.e., I'll stop returning their calls / e-mails until they figure it out. And then some day we'll bump into each other and it'll be really awkward for a few seconds, but then we can get back together for some ... "executives training program" or something.

Actually, the sooner the better, not for the schools who have probably kept you waiting more than they should have, but for the waitlisted applicants biting nails.

Sure, I've got TONS of compassion for those waitlisted applicants; no problem there. But what about wanting to keep the door open? Who knows what might happen?

This is how I did:

Subject of email: Final Decision

Dear XXXXX,

I sincerely thank you for giving me the admission offer to MBA program starting Sept 2007 at one of the greatest business school, ABC Business School. This was a great opportunity to know more about ABC Business School through the application process. But sometimes you have to make very tough decisions that become tougher when every choice carries the potential to lead you to success. That is why I have accepted an offer from another business school that best fits my career ambitions and goals. So I have to sadly inform you that I will not be able to be a part of wonderful MBA class that is starting in Sept 2007. I fully appreciate the effort the ABC admission staff has put into reviewing multiple parts of my application and profile. Even after this decision, my respect for Mr INTERVIEWER (It was telephonic interview with Recruitment Director) and other professors at ABC is still unshaken.

I hope we will cross roads at some point in life. I wish all the best to this year's incoming class.
