I have started adding alumni mass index scores for major MBA programs of the United States. There are four scores: Very Large, Large, Moderate, and Small. The scores are based on full time MBA gradute values and thus do not include PT and Exec MBA graduates of a given school. So far I have given scores for only three markets- the Northeast, the West, and the Midwest. There are, of course, other important regions in the US.
There are some noteworthy points to keep in mind. First, most ultra elites and one of the elites are the only schools with Large or Very Large scores for more than one region of these three region. It might come as little surprise that the ultra elite and elite schools in the "middle" of the country (Chicago, Northwestern, and Michigan) have Large or higher scores in all three regions. Outside the Midwest, only HBS and Wharton have large or very large scores for all three regions. MIT and Stanford come closest with Large or high scores in two regions.
Beyond these seven schools, schools are surprisingly regional. The elites of California (UCB and UCLA) have Very Large values in the West and small or moderate elsewhere. Likewise, the ultra elite and elites of New York state (Columbia, Cornell, and NYU) are very large in the Northeast and small or moderate elsewhere. Not surprisingly, the small elites of the northeast such as Dartmouth and Yale have very large mass index values in the northeast and small values everywhere else.
The trans elites are even more regional in nature. These schools tend to be smaller in many cases are located outside of these three regions. Emory, for instance, has only moderate scores in the Northeast and small scores in the other two markets (yes, Emory has a high score for the South).
