630 (Q49, V27)

Question

Today I appeared for GMAT and scored the following:
630 (Q49, V27)
 Please advise me what shall I do 

I did give a lot of practice tests but my verbal was never less than 35, I dont know what happened on the D-day. 

Do you think there is a room for improvement; personally speaking I dont want to give things up so easily. 

  Your views\opinions\strategies are needed to boost myself.

Can we get a sample of your practice scores? 
Also if possible can you tell us what exactly happened on the real test. Where you behind the clock and skipped many questions? Were the CR questions tough than the ones in GMAT Prep? etc.

Hey Ruby, 

As Jaynak said, you will have to provide at least hat practice test you had taken prior to the real thing. There are plenty of users (such as Jaynak) on here that are more than willing to help out and that info would make it easier. An 8 point drop is pretty huge, were you tired from the previous section?

Experience: 

 AWA: 
It went fine. I did a fair job in it.

 Quants: 
Maths appeared to be bit tough but I just kept on going. I did get a few easy questions in between and thought that I had screwed up the Quants. Timing: I was able to finish quants 5 minutes earlier.

 Verbal: 
SC : The questions were fairly difficult than the GMAT prep.
CR : I got 2 CR's in bold letters. One of them was initially and the next one was when I was around mid 20's. At the end CR's became fairly easy.
RC : First one had 2 paragraph (Medium difficulty), Second and third RC were 3 and 4 para respectively, Fourth RC had 2 paragraph.

 Timing in verbal: 
When 40 minutes were remaining I had finished 16 questions.
When 20 minutes were remaining I had finsihed 29 questions.
When 4 minutes were remaiining I had finsihed 37 questions.
Last 4 question 2 CR's and 2 SC's were more of guess work.


Seemed like I got lost in Verbal. Don't now what to say, but it feels bad. A score of 33 or 35 in verbal could have raised the score to 670+

 My practice test results were as follows: (No retakes) 

Power PRep 1: 690 (Q49, V35)
Power PRep 2: 700 (Q48, 38)

Manhattan GMAT 1: 560 (Q42, V 25)
Manhattan GMAT 2: 660 (Q45, V35)
Manhattan GMAT 3: 650 (Q46, V33)

Kaplan 1: 550 (Q38, V28)
Kaplan 2: 560 (Q40, V28)
Kaplan 3: 560 (Q50, V23)

I did score 28 in Kaplan Verbal but that is what everyone used to tell that dont worry about Kaplan socres. 

I think I did a mistake but ignoring Kaplan's score.

Thanks a lot for the detailed experience. 

GMAT Prep scores are a fairly excellent judge of how you will score in your real test. 

A drop of nearly 10 points in verbal suggests that something didnot go the way you planned. I am sure it is hard for you to pin point exactly what went wrong in verbal but it does appear (from your MGMAT and GPrep) that you can do much better. 

Its hard to comment anything specific without really knowing which part you are generally weak. 
Just one last question. What was your hit rates when you gave short timed tests for RC, CR and SC?

I would suggest to retake the GMAT as it just might be your bad day.

For Jay, 

While attempting 20 each questions of SC, CR and RC my succes rate in %age were as follows.

SC : 70%
CR : 80%
RC : 65%

Maths Problem solving : 95%
Data sufficiency: 85%

 For Makc, 
What is 1000 SC, 1000CR and 1000RC? I never practiced it becuase today only I came to know about it. PLease tell me how can I get it.

I think we can find some problem here. Your SC hit rate is good but RC hit rate is very low. 
If I take these hit rates as a basis.
You get nearly 6 wrong in RC, 6 wrong in SC and may be 3-4 wrong in CR.

That nearly comes around 17 wrong. 
Take this number and analyse it with ur previous GMAT Prep and how many you got wrong in them.

IMO, you should concentrate on RC and SC and get the percentage up to 80% atleast.

BTW, does OG feature in your presentation?

Jay, you are right on the money with the assesment. 

 Please advise me on the following: 

Can 1 month+ prepration, assumming I only do 1000 (SC, CR and RC) raise my verbal score from 27 to 38. and I maintain my maths score in the range of 46 to 49. Help me scoring scoring around 690 or 700.

I need some guidance here because my confidence level has been hit a bit hard.

How many months of preparation went into the first GMAT?

1+ month of focused preparation should be enough assuming you gave 2+ months for GMAT-1. But remember, it is very important to understand what you are studying. Quality matters more than quantity.

Thanks Jay, you are always right on the money.

It was approximately 3 months total time, in hours it will be around 120 hrs.

I joined this board yesterday itself and realized that there is lot of ground to be covered. 

Low socre was a set back but things do happen for good. 

As long as people like you are other boards are there, things can only improve.

Setbacks are temporary, learning is permanent.

Hit the books but one word of caution. Concentrate on verbal but don't let quant suffer.
