But the chief cause of that instability in the 1980s is resistance - the Gorbachev Doctrine, became necessary as the Brezhnev Doctrine failed because it met armed resistance. And that resistance drew strength and sustenance from the U.S., more precisely from the Reagan Doctrine, the American policy of supporting anti-Communist guerillas in the newest outposts of the Soviet empire; Afghanistan, Angola, Cambodia and Nicaragua.

It can be concluded that

RD only strengthened the resistance. We are not sure of the cause.

(B) every doctrine meets resistance and therefore fails, implying that may be the doctrine was not sustainable in the first place.

This is too general. And not relevant.

(C) The Reagan Doctrine was responsible for Gorbachev's rise.

Possibly.

(D) Brezhnev's Doctrine was anti-US.

We are not sure. BD could be anti to US friends. And so US intervened. Lets not bring in our history knowlege into CR. :wink:

(E) (A) and (C).

Not E for the above mentioned reasons.
