Fuqua Waitlist Concerns

Hi guys,

I applied to fuqua in round two and was placed on the waitlist. Two weeks after, I was admitted to Cornell Johnson and Ross.

I know that I was placed on the fuqua’s waitlist because of my gmat score which was below the average (660 GMAT). In an effort to get off the waitlist as fuqua is my top choice, I completed MBA math and took the EA and got a 157 ( which is supposed to be okay).

I updated fuqua with my new score and certificate , I however included that I had offers from Cornell and Ross and wanted to get an update from them before the next decision release date (10May24) as I was gonna have to to commit to either of the other two schools and pay the deposit. I did clarify that fuqua was my top choice.

They said that to be fair with all candidates they were unable to release any updates before the next decision release date.

I am concerned that they might think that I will turned them down if they give an offer because I will be committed to other school. They are my first choice , can anyone give me some advice? Opinions? Should I be worried?

Two thoughts here:

First, you are overthinking their reasons for not wanting to give you an update earlier than other waitlisted candidates. The whole purpose of the waitlist is that it is reviewed at a certain time and that choices are made from within a pool of waitlisted candidates and not as one offs.

Second, this is a very competitive year. If you didn't retake the test, you are missing out on the most important lever you have.

Hey Niconiconico,

I hope you are doing well. It's completely understandable that you're feeling anxious. Being waitlisted can be tough, especially when Fuqua is your top choice. While it's great that you updated them with your improved EA score and Cornell/Ross offers, their response about fairness to all candidates is standard procedure.

Here's the good news: You've shown strong initiative by improving your quant score and being upfront about your deadlines.  Since Fuqua knows Cornell and Ross are top programs, mentioning your acceptance shouldn't necessarily hurt your chances. It could even demonstrate your value as a potential admit.

However, navigating waitlists can be tricky. To give you the most specific advice on how to approach Fuqua moving forward, it would be helpful to delve deeper into your overall profile.

You should not be concerned and there's nothing else you can really do. You have done your best to submit additional information from improved scores/credentials to acceptances from peer institutions, both of which actually improve your chances. If the school wants you (and I would argue you have increased your odds) and there's space, they'll reach out with good news.

As for the commitment, the cost of playing the waitlist game is paying the deposit elsewhere to hold a spot. If you get into Fuqua, I imagine you will be happy to forego the deposit at the other programs for that opportunity.
