Hi Avinash,

Your GPA is low. I would like to remind you that ISB strictly evaluates applicants on these four criteria: Academics, GMAT/GRE scores, Professional history, and Interview performance. Your undergraduate pedigree and professional achievements will need to be presented in a strong light to achieve optimal scores in all these areas. While consulting goals are generic, you will need to project a solid strategy to demonstrate how you will attain your goals through ISB both in the short term and the long term.

Your experience in the public sector is a positive aspect. Since many MBA candidates will have advisory roles in their future jobs, your prior experience with non-governmental organizations or as a public sector advisor would have allowed you to understand issues beyond your core work area, providing an advantage in a program that aims to cultivate future business leaders. The problems that the majority of the world's population faces are not limited to first-world problems, and even governments and nonprofit organizations cannot single-handedly solve challenges of such magnitude. The experience of professionals who have worked in highly systematized and incentive-based environments can greatly enhance the effectiveness of strategies in the impact sector. Therefore, focusing on and discussing your initiatives that have made a positive impact on the people around you in your applications and interviews will help you position your profile strongly.

Feel free to have a candid discussion

Best wishes

Hi. The primary source of consulting recruits tends to be other consulting recruits so having a consulting background gives you much better chances.

These chances apply not only to your chances of getting a job but also chances of getting admitted to the program of your dreams. The safer and more logical your transition, the more likely you are to get admitted to business school.

Obviously, the more you can demonstrate that you have outgrown your current position and role, the better. One way is what you’re doing already, attending various events and participating in initiatives, other way would be building up your skill set, and accomplishing more than your peers. You can also see if you can get involved with some nonprofit initiatives to expand your consulting skill set and your network. This is a bonus, definitely not something you have to do. Consulting is very intensive and can suck up all your time.

PS. Are you looking only at ISB?
