In one week a construction worker worked more than 40 hours, and was paid two times his regular hourly rate for every hour worked in excess of 40 hours. If he earned $780, how many hours did he work in that week?

(1) If he had worked 6 more hours that week, his earnings would have been $960.
(2) If he had worked 20 fewer hours that week, his earnings would have been $390 less that week.

this is what i figured

1. 6 more hours equals to $ 180 dollars ( 960-780).
per hours is that 180: 6= $ 30 ( overtime). Since it is over time is two times more, the regular hour tarif is $ 15.
He worked 40h *$ 15 = $ 420
He received $ 780 . Overtime is $ 780-$ 420= $ 360 ( 12 hours - $30 p/h)
Total hours worked is 40+12=52
A= sufficient

If this is wrong, cansomebody please explain to me ?

how do you know all those 6 hrs.. are overtime??

because he worked more than 40 hours and that $780 is his total pay
and about 2 you can have two solutions therefore is not sufficient

780 = 40*(x) + n(2x)

where x = hourly rate
n = hours in excess of 40 hours

(1) 960 = 40(x) + 6(2x) --> can solve for x and thus solve for n. Sufficient.

(2)
780 = 40*(x) + na(2x)
q = 40*(x) + nb(2x)

We know he earned 780 - 390 = 390 dollars if he works 20 hours less

390 = 40*(x) + nb(2x)
We still have 2 unknown variables that cannot be solved.
Insufficient.

Ans A
